Green Turtle Soup
and other Favorite Recipes
of a Great Cook
Collection of the favorite meals of the Thompson family, recreated by the children in celebration of their mother's birthday and nothing but fine memories of her cooking! One of those children is my mother, so these are also the meals we enjoyed. Grandma Dorothy taught Home Economics and chemistry before raising her family. Fear not, no one ever made the Green Turtle Soup, although a small can obtained in Florida in their youth remained on the shelf just in case . . . well, as time went on, it was always better as a story.

Cooking with Grandma Joan
This grandma is my mother, and in this book my sisters and I celebrate her cooking. We tried hard to minimize the overlap with the Green Turtle Soup book, but some things were too important to leave out just because her mother also made them well. Her cookbooks are full of notes about changing a few ingredients to make a more interesting option. Meatloaf with pork and beef (that combination is the key not only to Meatloaf gravy but served as an excuse to always cook both together and make enough gravy for both meals). Her exact recipe for Red Cake with cooked frosting is now illegal due to the elimination of really good red food dyes, but we can still imagine it by tasting the
Gooseberry Preserves
and Other Delights from the Kitchen of Mae Pascoe
Grandma Mae, queen of Beetown, was also a great cook. With a large garden, she specialized in fresh vegetables and home canned tomatoes! Starting on a wood stove, she shifted with no problem to electricity. As good as her food always was (chicken and dumplings included homemade noodles as well), the grandchildren remember the elegant soft-boiled eggs and green tea with fried potatoes best. Her pasties were authentic, given her father come from Cornwall. Low and slow with chickens, beef and pork.

Civil War Diary of Philip K. Roesch
Philip K. Roesch, young immigrant farmer from Grant County, Wisconsin kept this diary in his native language while fighting for his new country in a war to maintain the ideals that brought his family to our shores. With the help of his youngest daughter, many years later he translated it to English. Working from two slightly different typed version, the complete text has been restored, and additional information added.

Destruction and Reconstruction
Confederate General Richard Taylor, son of General and President Zachary Taylor, and brother-in-law of Confederate President Jefferson Davis (his late first wife), translated his readings in classic warfare into a success in surviving the Civil War, albeit while being on the wrong side of history.
We get here his very well written description of that experience, as well as his tale of trying to advise President Grant on how to approach Reconstruction. He had less success in that effort. He may, or may not be my 4th cousin, 4 times removed.
