Civil War Diary of Philip K. Roesch
Philip K. Roesch, young immigrant farmer from Grant County, Wisconsin kept this diary in his native language while fighting for his new country in a war to maintain the ideals that brought his family to our shores. With the help of his youngest daughter, many years later he translated it to English. Working from two slightly different typed version, the complete text has been restored, and additional information added. [Large print and e-book versions only contain the basic text]

Destruction and Reconstruction
Confederate General Richard Taylor, son of General and President Zachary Taylor, and brother-in-law of Confederate President Jefferson Davis (his late first wife), translated his readings in classic warfare into a success in surviving the Civil War, albeit while being on the wrong side of history.
We get a well written description of that experience, as well as his tale of trying to advise President Grant on how to approach Reconstruction. He had less success in that effort, and the writing is less elegant.
He may, or may not be my 4th cousin, 4 times removed.

La Follette's Autobiography
Subtitled, A Personal Narrative of Political Experiences, Governor La Follette tells the story of what turned out to be the first half of his political career. It has as many descriptions as readers. Some see myth, some fiction, but it is nothing less than his version of the truth. A version far closer to truth than the one told by others. Intended as a possible campaign vehicle if his attempt to gain the Republican nomination for President was successful, it now stands as a testament to the clarity of his vision of the politics of the day and a prelude to the struggles in the times to come. Illustrated with the original and additional photos, and an added bonus of the text of his winning oration at the Inter-state Oratorical contest at Iowa City, IA in 1879.

The Political Philosphy
of Robert M. La Follette
A compellation of speeches and writings from his early political career, this book does a very good job of detailing the many concerns of the Governor of Wisconsin and his version of progressivism in the first quarter of the twentieth century. We even get his view about licensing dogs. Would that it was an audio book read by the man himself. But we are lucky to have the words. Ernest and honest. Ever acting in the interest of the many.

The Wisconsin Idea
There are in truth three variations of The Wisconsin Idea. The first was imagined by University of Wisconsin President Charles Van Hise, classmate of Robert and Belle La Follette. It called for the boundaries of the university to extend to the outer physical borders of the state. Extending the knowledge of experts to all. Specifically, it led to the formation of the University of Wisconsin Extension. The second came with Governor La Follette's use of university experts on his state government boards and commissions. This book represents both a third variation and a more extensive explication of all three. Charles McCarthy developed the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau to help individual legislators to better write proposed bills. This ties together all aspects of both the university and government in pursuit of progress. McCarthy (the good one) tells a detailed and important story of Wisconsin's progressive tradition.

Our Judicial Oligarchy
Gilbert Roe was an early law partner of Robert M. La Follette, Sr. When the latter entered politics, Roe moved to New York city. They remained close and La Follette often asked for advice on political and legal issues. This book was first serialized from June 17, 1911, to December 16, 1911, in La Follette's Weekly Magazine. If you think the justice system is unbalanced in its decisions, this book explains that it isn't a new development. La Follette contributed an introduction.

Other People's Money
Even before becoming a Supreme Court Justice, Louis D. Brandeis was a legal battering ram. In this series of articles on the operation of the money trust, Brandeis is at his best. His progressive approach is clear. He makes his case with authority and clarity. The original illustrations from its 1913 Harper's Weekly serialization are included.

Concentration and Control
A solution of the Trust Problem in the United States
University of Wisconsin President Charles Van Hise was a geologist, but here he shows an affinity for economics and politics. Originator of the 'Wisconsin Idea,' Van Hise clarity of thought is on clear display. Raymond Moley has credited Van Hise, and this book, for providing the philosophy of the New Deal. The text of John Sherman's Anti-Trust Law of 1890 is added as a bonus.

Pragmatism
A New Name for some Old Ways of Thinking
An old classic of Philosophy. Willliam James' introduction to the basic ideas behind Pragmatism fits well with the other titles presented here. This approach is the closest thing we have to an American Philosophy of history. This is in many ways my primary interest, so it is not surprising that I have chosen to publish this title.

Human, All too Human
This is by far the best book Nietzsche produced. His aphoristic approach is at its zenith. However, it is still a challenge for most readers. As the words pore out of his fervent mind, we get not only brilliance but unreadable paragraphs and sentences. My solution is to break the paragraphs into smaller bits (an act quite friendly with the aphoristic ideal). You can still see the paragraph by noting indentation, but you can also read and think, pause and reflect. Perhaps even better understand his intent. I hope you enjoy the effort. Sorry, there was nothing I could do to help with the sentences.

The Use and Abuse of History
and Schopenhauer as Educator
I first purchased this book when I was an undergraduate. That was a long time ago. I have repeatedly attempted to read it, only to get overwhelmed by its stolid style. Recently I was able to get through it and was interested to discover that it wasn't what I expected. It isn't nearly as stolid as it seemed. This is the first book that I decided needed to have its paragraphs broken into smaller, more readable, sections. Thus, was born what I call the 'Airy edition.' The 'air' allows the reader to read, think, absorb, perhaps reread, think again, think better!

The Devil's Dictionary
We still don't know what happened to Ambrose Bierce. He disappeared enroute to meet Zapata and his Mexican rebels. Well, perhaps he found them. When he wasn't on such a dangerous journalistic trip, he sometimes sat at his typewriter and produced new definitions for words. He is perhaps Webster's doppelganger. These definitions appeared in his newspaper columns under various titles. They were compiled in several books, first The Demon's Dictionary, then the Cynic's Word Book. The Devil's Dictionary finally as volume 7 of his complete works (he was also a short story writer, poet, and satirist in addition to journalist). To this volume I have added some variations in definitions as well as new words found in a search for the original newspaper columns.

The Life and Morals of Jesus
of Nazareth
Extracted Textually from the Gospels
Jefferson's Bible is often seen as proof of his Christian views. You can make up your own mind. Here you get the text as well as photos from the original Government Printing Office edition that illustrated the method to Jefferson's madness. You see the carefully trimmed passages (cut with a knife as sharp as Jefferson's mind) pasted together onto the pages of a presumably unwanted book. The result is certainly interesting, but far different from many of the editions published shortly before the Printing Office edition appeared. Those were based on a photo of his handwritten table of scriptures. With only the names and numbers listed, they included the whole passages, including the 'miracles' so carefully excised by Jefferson. Thus, the book took on an appearance and aim that it simply did not have. See for yourself. It is an interesting, if not somewhat strange, idea and book.

A Dictionary of American Politics
(1892)
Everit Brown & Albert Straus
Progressivism grew out of the politics of the late 19th century and the growth of a new way of thinking that bloomed at the end of that century. While this book does not specifically cover that issue, it does a very good job of listing the ideas and events that influenced positively and negatively. Much of what it deems important we no longer try to remember. This is a mistake.

Political Reform in Wisconsin
A Historical Review of the Subjects of
Primary Election, Taxation, and Railway Regulation
Emanuel L. Philipp
The opposition speaks, as former Governor Philipp rewrites the history of Reform in Wisconsin. By his telling it was all done by 'Regular Republican' action in the name of continuing clean government in Wisconsin. He is challenging Robert M. La Follette's 'Republicanism.' Meaning La Follette would not conform to the decision making of the Republican Party officialdom but insisted on doing what he wanted. That is true. What is in conflict is the right of the old line to require adherence to its will.

Recollections of a Long Life:
1929-1915
Isaac Stephenson.
Isaac Stephenson is best known as both a congressman (183-1889) and Senator from the state of Wisconsin (1907-1915). This however understates the man's life. He details it all in this short, but fascinating, autobiography. He details his role in support of Robert Marion La Follette, Sr., as well as his later break from the Senator. But it is the early years that make this story unique. His experiences were multifold and diverse. State assembyman, lumberman, water mill operator, ship Captain, and Newspaper owner touch some of his jobs. He is in many ways a prime example of Frederick Jackson Turner's frontier thesis. The only drawback to this book is its brevity, likely due to his humility in telling it.

Keep 'Em Laughing
A Story of the Operations of the 15th Special Services Company during World War II
Maurice Pascoe
A short 'history' of an unusual part of the Army during WWII. They landed at Normandy, but after the fighting ended. It is hard to defend yourself with a trumpet or a joke. But the Army knew it troops needed aid and comfort, so the Special Services came into being. They showed movies, put on shows, and generally provided relief to the troops. The front was near, and not everything was a joke. Bombs can land in the most unwelcome places.
